Treasure: From Tragedy to Trans Justice, Mapping a Detroit Story (with short film We All We Got) Documentary Competition (2015 , 63 min. ) Directed by: Dream Hampton Screenwriter: Producers: Cinematographer: Adam Saewitz Editor: Darryl Phillips Music: Ahya Simone Cast: Emani Love, Lyniece Nelson
To bear witness is not enough. Shelly Hilliard, known by her friends as ‘Treasure,’ was a beloved friend and daughter, and a vital part of a thriving community in Detroit. As a teenage, Black transgender woman, her death is not only on the hands of the murderer, but also on the local suburban police, whose coercion was ultimately responsible for Treasure’s murder. Created in longstanding conversation with her own communities of activist leaders, Detroit native dream hampton’s compelling directorial feature debut enables a direct address of this beautiful life lost as Treasure’s community and family speak in no uncertain terms about the conditions in which Treasure was made vulnerable, and their strategy for sustained justice.
We All We Got , Directed by Carlos Javier Ortiz
The poetic language of the streets: police helicopters; music popping out of cars; ambulances on the run; preachers hollering for the violence to stop after another young man is senselessly gunned down in the streets of Chicago.
